On the property it is losing it's battle to directors who are lost themselves. Like Camelot, the dream will live on in our hearts. The land will remain no matter who is on it, and the land is powerful in itself. I will not lose hope that the true feeling of Esalen will return. Let us not lose that hope and dream. Let us help. My energy, all of me is yours.. All of you Gods and Godesses who grace Esalen. There is infinite richness out here, in all of us, for the asking. Let us open those doors. Let Esalen be a place of bliss for my grandkids too. Reading all this about my precious place of pilgrimage brings me to tears. Let us help. My energy, all of me is yours.. But those were the golden days of my mentor Joe Campbell, of Claudio Naranjo, Gregory Bateson, Al Chuang...when Stan Grof helped us along our mushroom-strewn paths with his oak-tree solidness, indifferent but loving to all of us who sought some elusive answer. Was it because most of the great minds who created Esalen workshops died that the organization became so "precious" and commercialized? Who knows...but after the early 90's, we took off to the mountains of Mexico to live a far more authentic journey. Sorry to see Esalen go the way of the corporate world, but my memories will continue to inform me of Michael Murphy's original, prophetic dream of spiritual growth. So vague that when I left, instead of "we'll let you know when our decision is made" I was told to call them when I've made my decision. Now this job was to handle personnel, insurance, records, etc. In my experience with HR, you check the applicants background throughly before hiring someone to keep valuable paperwork of the employees. Not at Easlen. Now they are moving the office to Carmel? Failure is in the making. I also had an interview at Easlen a few years ago and agree that it was vague. In fact, you can make a good case that the root of the problem was back with John Young in the late 80's/early 90's when a non-hardware guy was hired to run a hardware company. Carly Fiorina was just the last in a series of bad moves on the part of the board, and was brought in solely to achieve the Compaq merger, which made the board a ton of money. After that she was expendable. Similar issues are apparent at Esalen: people running the company who are not committed to the core-competency of the company, but are positioning themselves for board membership and future pay. The most striking thing is how much it looks like a takeover which would result in a breakup of the company and a sell-off of assets. I wish you all the love in the world. They too are going through the same tumultuous changes and trying to redefine what Hollyhock is to become in the future and losing much of the soul of its path along the way. As someone of the "general public", it's sad to see the poor choice of subjects/classes and super high prices. "..in all things the supreme excellence is simplicity." There is birth, growth, fulfillment, relative stasis, followed by decline and death. It is all a process. Which can be the "good" parts; and which the "bad" parts? The reason I value old memories of Esalan with Alan Watts and midnight soaks, is that it is one point in time that can never be duplicated again. Life is a circle, we are just in another segment.
